How to Find a Reliable Handyman

Especially when you move to a new city or town, it can be hard to discern where to start looking for a reliable handyman. After all, you may not be familiar with the area or the community yet. Word of mouth is often a huge factor that goes into discovering the best services in each location.

Hiring a general contractor that does it all—from remodeling, renovations, painting, carpentry, additions, and more—will probably be your best bet. So, how do you find the most reliable one?

Ask Around.

Although you may not have a community yet, asking your neighbors or even the clerk at the grocery store is a great way to start gauging which contractor may be the best fit for your needs. Once you get a few recommendations, make sure you follow up by doing your research online to further vet them. Depending on what you need a handyman for and how often you require their services, your criteria will vary. This plays a big part in which contractor you’ll ultimately hire.

Read Online Reviews.

Don’t feel comfortable asking around? Or maybe the people you run into don’t know what direction to point you in? Do a quick Google search and read different local contractors’ online reviews. From Google My Business to Facebook and Yelp, there are lots of locations online that should have reviews and testimonials from past and present clients of the different handymen in your area. Take bad reviews with a grain of salt but also look out for red flags when there are overwhelmingly negative reviews.

Get a Few Quotes.

Don’t immediately limit your options by going with the first contractor you come across! You may be able to find a price point that’s more friendly on your wallet. It’s always smart to shop around for a bit and get quotes from several different potential contractors to see which one will be able to do what you want them to do and at a reasonable asking price. Make sure to weigh cost with other factors such as quality and timeline as you review your estimates.

Ask to Talk to a Current Client.

Are you pretty sure that you’ve found the right contractor, but you’d like a little extra confirmation of their reputation for peace of mind? Ask the contractor if you can talk to one of their current or past clients to get a sense of what working with them is like. If they have nothing to hide and no confidentiality agreements, they should be more than willing to oblige.
